Taking a Break (from all my worries sure would help a lot)
You guessed it, I’m taking a break. I won’t be updating Waste Island for a while because I’m currently working on another project that is also related to WI but will not be shown on niqueworks. That’s right, it’s a secret project. A super secret project. Oooh cryptic.
But in the meantime I’ll review Coraline, that new stop-motion movie that is for some reason being shown in 3-D. I hate 3-D. I mean, it’s fun times in real life but in movies… unnecessary. Though I get how kids could find it entertaining. And Coraline is a good kids’ movie. Excellent even. But as an adult I was left wanting more. It was very low tension and the main villain was lacking. We got no sense of her motivation and for that reason she lacked menace. The ending was too quick and it was too easy for the protagonist to solve the problem/save the day. When it was over I was sitting there saying “that’s it?”
But it was just as beautiful as you’ve heard and I’m truly impressed that those hardcore animators dedicated 3 years of their lives to make this little movie that is over much too soon.
Still, I think the mark of a good adaptation is that it makes you want to check out the source material. I have no such desire here.
But don’t take my word for it… da dum dum. I didn’t really like Wall-E either.
